Hong Kong is one of the world’s leading container ports. Operations were underway at the port on the Kowloon side.

香港は世界有数のコンテナ港です。九龍側の港では作業が行われていました。

Through the gaps between the cranes, you can see ferries traveling back and forth across Victoria Harbor. I once read in a book that the ferries originated as a ferry service started by Indians to deliver freshly baked buns to a hotel on the opposite shore. The history of these ferries now stretches well over 100 years. The mountain on the opposite shore of Hong Kong Island is Victoria Peak, a prime spot for viewing the night view.

クレーンの間からビクトリア港を行き来するフェリーが見えます。フェリーの前身は対岸のホテルへ焼きたてのバンを届けるためにインド人が始めた渡し船だと、なんかの本で読んだことがあります。そんなフェリーの歴史も100年をとうに超えています。対岸の香港島の山は夜景を眺める絶好のポイントのビクトリア・ピークです。

香港島のビル群です。

The skyscrapers of Central. The white building in the center is the 52-story Connaught Centre. Floating in Victoria Harbour are small junk boats called sampans. Sampans serve as both vessels and homes for the “Daman” (floating community), who make their living through fishing, selling goods, and transporting cargo. The Daman have long faced discrimination as members of the lowest social class. Their community is based in Aberdeen, on the southern side of Hong Kong Island—directly across from Central. I saw sampans frequently in Victoria Harbour back then, but I wonder if these floating communities still exist in Hong Kong today.

中環(セントラル)のビル群。中央の白いビルが地上52階建てのコンノート・センターです。ビクトリア港に浮かんでいるのはサンパンと呼ばれる小型ジャンク船です。サンパンは蛋民(たんみん)と呼ばれる水上生活者が漁業、物品販売、荷物搬送などの生業のための船、そして住居でもあります。蛋民は古くから最下層民として差別を受けてきた人たちです。彼らの生活拠点は香港島の南側の香港仔(アバディーン)、ちょうどセントラルの反対側になります。当時ビクトリア港でよくサンパンを見かけていましたが、まだ香港に彼ら水上生活者の蛋民はいるのでしょうか。

九龍のメインストリート、ネイザン通りから少し入るとこんな光景です。香港名物、これでもかとやたら張り出している看板です。

ネイザン通りで見かけた光景です。ビルの補修か清掃か、高層ビルでも足場は長くつないだ竹を組んでいきます。私が子供のころ丸太で足場を組んでいたのを見ましたが、それは普通の建物です。日本の高層ビルの場合、ご存じのように鉄パイプをジョイントでつないで足場を組みます。ゴンドラの場合もあります。ところが香港では竹をつないで組んでいくのがあたりまえのようでした。これが私が香港で一番驚いたことかもしれません。

次回から１年半にわたる自転車旅の最後、台湾一周になります。
