From age 32 to 33 (1982–1983), I spent a year and a half traveling by bicycle through North America, Europe, North Africa, and other regions. Then, at age 40 (1989), I set out on a six-month bicycle journey around Japan.

This blog is something I wrote over the course of three years, looking back on my diaries and photos from that time.

Looking at this blog’s viewing data, I noticed a fair number of visits not only from Japanese readers but also from Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia, and North and South America. This might be because I used English regional and country names in the blog title.

I thought, “Perhaps people overseas interested in bicycle travel are reading this Japanese blog after AI-translating it into their native language or English,” or “Writing in English might allow more people to read it,” or “For some languages, automatic translation from English might be better than from Japanese.”

Ten years have passed since then, and with the help of a friend, I’ve decided to republish this blog in English. I hope more people will learn about bicycle travel in the 1980s, a time before smartphones.

「自転車旅に興味を持つ海外の人が日本語ブログを母語や英語にAI翻訳して読んでいるのだろう」「英語で書いたらより多くの人に読んでもらえるかもしれない」「言語によっては日本語よりも英語から自動翻訳した方がいい」そんなふうに思っていました。

それから10年が経過、このたび友人の協力を得てブログを英語で再掲載をすることにしました。より多くの方に1980年代のスマホがなかった時代の自転車旅について知っていただければ幸いです。
