I visited the shop again to pick up my new bike.
“So, how’s it look? Do you like it?”
I felt like the bike sitting in the corner was talking to me,
and I found myself saying,
“Man, a new bike really is something.”
Honestly, I’d thought the mustard-colored frame might be a bit flashy. But the overall impression from the assembled bike was actually quite refined, and I was very satisfied with the finish.
I learned the unfamiliar methods and tips for disassembly and reassembly, planning to take the train home with the bike in its bag.
Following the shop’s recommendation, I bought the Sportsman brand bike bag from Joto Rinkogyo. It featured a sturdy handle in the center of the light blue tent-like fabric, a large pocket beside it, and came with accessories: a frame cover, tightening straps, and a small pouch. The price was ¥9,500.
Bike bags back then were pricier than today, with some costing over ¥10,000. The Sportsman brand bag was durable; I patched it up and used it for quite a long time.
For reserved seats on trains during bike transport, the best spots—considering other passengers—were behind the driver’s seat or in front of the conductor’s compartment, where there was relatively more space.
Heading home from work, I often boarded the last car due to the ticket gate at my nearest station. Occasionally, I’d see what looked like university club members placing their bike bags in the space in front of the conductor’s compartment.
I placed my bike bag in the designated spot and boarded the Sobu Line, then transferred to the Chuo Line for my journey home. And so, my bike-carrying test(?) concluded without incident.
新車の引き取りに再びショップを訪れました。
「どう、カッコいい? 気に入った?」
隅におかれた自転車が話しかけてきたような気がして、
「やっぱり、新車はいいなぁ」
と、思わず声を出していました。
実は、辛子色のフレームはちょっと派手かなと思っていたのです。しかし、組み上がった全体のフォルムから受ける印象は、逆に落ち着きが感じられ、満足のいく仕上がりでした。
慣れない分解・組み立て作業の方法やコツを教えてもらい、自宅へは輪行で帰るつもりでいました。
ショップの薦めで、輪行袋は城東輪業社のスポーツマン印を購入。ライトブルーのテント地の中央には丈夫な取っ手、その横に大きなポケットがあり、付属品としてフレームカバー・締めつけバンド・小物入れがついて、価格は9,500円でした。
そのころの輪行袋は、今よりも高めで、1万円以上するものもありました。スポーツマン印の輪行袋は丈夫で、継ぎはぎしながら、かなり長いあいだ使用しました。
電車内での輪行の指定席は、他の乗客との兼ね合いから、比較的スペースのある運転席の後ろ、または車掌室の前がベストです。
仕事帰りの私は、最寄り駅の改札の都合もあって、最後尾の車両に乗ることが多く、ときどき大学のサークルとおぼしき人たちが車掌室の前のスペースに輪行袋を置くのを見かけました。
私も所定の場所に輪行袋を置き、総武線と中央線を乗り継いで帰宅の途へ。こうして、輪行のテスト(?)は無事に終わりました。
