Road Racers: A Different Dimension of Riding

After the war, the cycling style introduced as a sport was dominated by touring on randonneur bikes. Road racers were seen as the domain of highly competitive individuals. The demand was for lightweight, strong frames specifically for road racers, and the reality was that only a few hand-built frame makers could meet this need.

By the 1970s, road racers began appearing on city streets. Occasionally, media started covering overseas road races, and we were surprised by the racers’ outfits: flashy jerseys, tight-fitting tights, caps, and helmets. But what truly astonished us was the sheer power of the racers as they sped past, the sound of their wheels echoing.

The reasons I chose Cherubim, despite knowing almost nothing about road racers, were threefold: first, seeing the actual bike in the shop and thinking “Nice!”, second, being moved by their promise of “frames built with a new sensibility to fit Japanese physiques”, and finally, the advertising copy that made me want to retort “Seriously?”, which read: “Please ride modestly on public roads. A cyclist was fined for riding at 73 km/h.”

戦後、スポーツとして紹介された自転車のスタイルは、ランドナーによるツーリングが主流でした。ロードレーサーは競技志向の強い人たちのものという認識でした。求められるのは、ロードレーサー用の軽くて強いフレーム、一部のハンドメーカーがそれに応えていたという現実がありました。

1970年代になると、街中でもロードレーサーを見かけるようになりました。ときどき、メディアも海外のロードレースを紹介するようになり、私たちは派手なジャージにピッチリしたタイツ、頭にキャップとカスクというレーサーの格好に驚きました。しかし、本当に驚いたのは車輪の音とともに高速で駆け抜けていくレーサーたちの迫力でした。

ロードレーサーのことをほとんど知らない私がケルビムを選択した理由は、まず、ショップで実物を見て「イイなぁ」と感じ、次に「新しい感覚で日本人の体にあうフレーム作り」に気持ちが動かされ、最後に「マジかよ」と、思わずツッコミたくなった当時の広告のコピー「街道では控え目に走ってください。時速73キロで罰金をとられたサイクリストがいます」の三つです。
