I was able to enjoy cycling for two days in a row—first at Taroko Gorge the day before, and then at the Qingshui Cliffs today.
Recently, international hill climb races for cyclists covering over 3,000 meters and public marathons have started being held in Taroko Gorge. Many people from Japan are also visiting Taroko Gorge and the Qingshui Cliffs on organized tours. I hope people will remember that the hard rock formations and steep terrain unique to Taiwan have claimed many lives during road construction.
[Oh no, it’s raining. Thank goodness I’m not in the middle of the cliffs right now!] A sudden downpour started in the evening. I’d gotten caught in a light rain the night before at Wenshan Hot Springs, but this was the first real rain I’d experienced since arriving in Taiwan. [Ugh, it’s getting heavier and heavier.]
Just before reaching the town of Suao, I had to rush to set up camp for the night. Panicking never leads to anything good. The tip of one of my fiberglass poles cracked. I cut off the damaged section with a knife and wrapped it with tape as a temporary fix. My tent is a shelter-style model; I connect several short fiberglass poles to form an arch, ensuring the tent’s height and a wide entrance. Since that pole is now shorter, the tent isn’t quite as taut as it used to be.
[I’m glad this happened at the very end of the trip.] Two more days to Taipei—I think I’ll manage.
From Suao in northeastern Taiwan to Yilan, the landscape opens up into a vast plain. Route 9 runs inland through this area, but I decided to take the coastal road, which has relatively less traffic.
[I wish the weather were better] The rain that had started yesterday evening had stopped, but I was riding under a gloomy, overcast sky. “Blue skies and sea, a distant horizon”—even though I’ve been riding along the coast for the past two or three days, my wish hasn’t come true.
前日の太魯閣峡谷、そしてこの日の清水断崖と二日連続で自転車の走りを堪能できました。
最近では太魯閣峡谷を走る三千ｍ超級の自転車の国際ヒルクライムレースや市民マラソンが開催されるようになってきました。そして太魯閣峡谷や清水断崖へ日本からのツアーで多くの人が訪れています。台湾ならではの固い地層や急峻な地形により、道路工事で多くの犠牲者を出したことを思い起こしてほしいと思います。
［ヤバッ、雨だよ。断崖通過中じゃなくて良かったーッ］夕方から急な雨になりました。前夜、文山温泉で小雨に降られましたが台湾に来て初めての本格的な雨です。［うへーッ、ますます降ってきた］
蘇澳の街の手前で急いで野宿の支度となりました。慌てるとロクなことはありません。グラスファイバーの支柱の末端がヒビ割れてしまいました。ナイフでその部分をカットし、テープを巻いて応急処理を施しました。私のテントはシェルター型、短いグラスファイバーを数本繋いでアーチを作り、テントの高さと入口の広さを確保します。その支柱が短くなった分、少しテントの張りがなくなりました。［旅の最後の最後で良かった］台北まであと二日、何とかなりそうです。
台湾北東部の蘇澳から宜蘭(イーラン)にかけては平野部が広がっています。９号線はその内陸に延びていますが、私は比較的交通量の少ない海岸線の道を行くことにしました。
［天気がよければなぁ］昨日の夕方からの雨は上がっていましたが、どんよりとした曇り空の下を走っていました。「青い空と海、遥か遠くの水平線」この２､３日海沿いを走っていても願いはかないませんでした。
The rice ears are turning golden, waiting to be harvested. The faint outline visible offshore is “Guishan Island,” which has a circumference of about 10 kilometers. At that time, the island’s residents were relocated to Yilan, and the island was placed under military control. Guishan Island is a volcanic island. As a result, it boasts many tourist attractions, such as hot springs, lakes, and caves, and was opened to the public as a tourist destination after martial law was lifted. However, to protect the natural environment, permanent residence is not permitted. Even those who work on the island commute via the same boat as tourists. In recent years, the waters around the island have also begun attracting tourists as a dolphin and whale watching area.
About 100 kilometers east of Guishan Island lies Yonaguni Island of Japan, the westernmost point of Japanese archipelago. This area marks the closest point between Taiwan and Japan. The city of Yilan lies just a few kilometers behind the scene in the photo.
稲穂が色づき、刈り取りを待っています。沖合いにぼんやりと写っているのは周囲10キロほどの「亀山島(グイジャンダオ)」です。当時、この島の住民は宜蘭へ移住させられ島は軍の管理下にありました。亀山島はもともと火山島です。そのため島内には温泉、湖、洞窟など観光資源が多く、戒厳令解除後は観光の島として解放されました。ただし自然保護のために居住は許されていません。島で働く人も観光客と同じ船で通っています。この数年、島の周辺はイルカやクジラのウォッチング・エリアとして観光客を集めるようにもなってきました。
亀山島の100キロほど東は日本の最西端、与那国島です。このあたりが台湾と日本の一番近い所です。写真の背中数キロが宜蘭の街になります。
