Over 40 Years with the Cherubim Road

I was eager to see how the road racer equipped with the latest Shimano 600 would perform. I decided to ride it home right away, from the shop in Suginami to my home in Koganei.

最新のシマノ600を装着したロードレーサーは、一体どんな走りなのか楽しみでした。ショップのある杉並から自宅の小金井まで、さっそく自走して帰ることに。

The ride is “light and fast.” That sums it up, and I’m also satisfied with the smooth shifting. This ride, in a different dimension from a touring bike, taught me a new way to enjoy cycling.

This Cherubim Road bike is still in active service over 40 years later, accompanying me on my daily rides. Naturally, I’ve replaced a few parts.

This is a frame my brother made

I think it was about ten or fifteen years after I bought it. While riding along the Mito Highway, I felt something off with the brakes. I dashed into a shop along the road, and the owner said, “Hey, this is a frame your big brother made.”

“Huh, really?” As it turned out, that shop was a Cherubim shop run by his younger brother. At the time, the brake levers had some play, so I replaced them with new ones. While I was at it, I also replaced the outer wiring and swapped out the worn-out saddle for a new one.

走りは「軽くて速い」。それに尽き、スムーズな変速にも満足。ランドナーとは違う異次元の走りは、私に自転車の新たな楽しみ方を教えてくれました。

このケルビム・ロードですが、40年以上経過した今も現役で、私の普段の走りに付き合ってくれています。当然ですが、いくつかのパーツは交換しています。

これ、兄貴が作ったフレームだ

購入から十数年過ぎたころだと思います。水戸街道を走行中、ブレーキに違和感を感じて、街道沿いのショップに飛び込むと、店主が「これ、兄貴が作ったフレームだ」と言うのです。

「えっ、そうなんですか」。なんと、そのお店は弟さんの経営するケルビム・ショップでした。その時はブレーキレバーにガタがあったので新品に替え、ついでにアウターのワイヤリング、ヘタリの出てきたサドルも新しく交換しました。

After that, as my leg strength started to decline, I switched to a compact chainring, a wide cassette with a 28T sprocket, and clincher wheels for strength and ease of use.

The only parts remaining from the original purchase, aside from the frame, are the hubs, handlebars, stem, brakes, and the front and rear derailleurs. Of course, I plan to keep riding it, replacing parts and performing maintenance as needed.

その後、脚力が落ちてきたのを機にチェーンホイールをコンパクトに、フリーを28Ｔのついたワイドに、そして、ホイールは強度と扱いやすさを考えてクリンチャーに交換しました。

フレームを除いて購入時のままのパーツはハブ、ハンドル、ステム、ブレーキ、そして、前後の変速機。もちろん、これからもパーツ交換やメンテをしながら乗り続けていくつもりです。
